Gorilla trekking is never an ordinary wildlife encounter. In Rwanda, the journey begins on the green slopes of the Virunga Mountains, where the forest feels ancient and every sound sharpens the senses. Choosing when to travel shapes the rhythm of the day, but each season offers its own beauty.
The drier months
June through September and December through February are often favoured for clearer trails. The forest remains lush, yet paths can feel firmer underfoot. These months are popular, so permits and the most intimate lodges are best arranged well in advance.
Mornings can still be cool and misty. A light rain jacket, sturdy walking shoes, and comfortable layers remain essential. The changing weather is part of the atmosphere, and a veil of mist often makes the first glimpse of a gorilla family even more moving.
The quieter green seasons
March through May and October through November bring more rain. The forest is vibrant, the light is soft, and visitor numbers are usually lower. Trails may be more demanding, but travellers who enjoy a slower pace are rewarded with a deeply immersive experience.
The finest time to visit is the moment that suits your pace, your interests, and the wider journey you want to create.
Beyond the trek
Rwanda deserves time beyond Volcanoes National Park. Pair the forest with a private stay beside Lake Kivu, a thoughtful visit in Kigali, or chimpanzee tracking beneath the canopy of Nyungwe. The result is a journey with contrast, calm, and a genuine sense of place.
Our specialists arrange permits, private guides, considered lodge stays, and every transfer. This leaves you free to be present for the encounter itself.
